The Legend Behind the Name
Step into the shadowy past of England’s most infamous highwayman.
With his loyal horse Black Bess by his side, Dick Turpin carved his name into English folklore — thundering through moonlit lanes, pistol in hand.
At Turpins Bar & Grill, we celebrate that same bold spirit — not with stolen purses, but with hearty feasts, roaring drinks, and stories worth retelling.

Who Was Dick Turpin?
Born in the early 1700s, Richard ‘Dick’ Turpin became one of England’s most notorious outlaws. Once a common criminal, he grew into a figure of legend - part truth, part tall tale.
Stories of daring robberies, narrow escapes, and that famous ride on Black Bess from London to York have been told for centuries.
The real Turpin may not have been quite the gentleman rogue that folklore suggests, but his reputation for rebellion and adventure has stood the test of time - and it’s that spirit we’ve taken inspiration from.

Turpin and Twycross
There’s no record of Dick Turpin ever visiting Twycross, though the rolling Leicestershire countryside feels like the kind of place he might have passed through.
This area is steeped in old coaching roads, country inns, and tales of travellers and tricksters - the kind of setting that keeps legends alive.
Our name isn’t tied to a local sighting, but to the idea of living boldly. It’s a nod to the mischief, independence, and sense of adventure that Turpin came to represent - qualities we like to think are reflected in our food, our atmosphere, and our guests.
A Toast to the Legend
Here at Turpins Bar & Grill, we raise a glass to that rebellious spirit — whether it’s with one of our signature cocktails, a pint from our drinks menu, or a bottle from our wine list.
It’s all about good food, good company, and the kind of stories that get better each time they’re told. And for our younger guests, we’ve got hearty favourites fit for a little legend too.
So come in, take a seat, and make yourself part of the story.
